8 | ASP June 2016 Technical Tech tips Smile! And put the vehicle on a candid camera ROLL CAMERA... ACTION! Miniature, battery-powered digital video cameras such as the "Go Pro" brand and others make it easy to record action with a bird's eye view, mounted to your jacket, hat, helmet, etc. We began taking advantage of this now- afordable technology during test drives, mounting one or more cameras to record specifc events, such as suspension movement, wheel wobble, brake caliper action, under- hood recording to locate intermittent leaks, drive belt operation, and more. Te possibilities are only limited to your imagination and mounting access and, of course, taking care to avoid extremely high temperatures that could damage the camera. Tis provides us with an audio and visual record, sort of like viewing freeze frame data, or live data, but in a video format, looking for mechanical issues. Te makers of these "sports-action" mini video cameras ofer a variety of camera mounting systems. Tey can be very useful in diagnosis as well as providing the customer with proof of the problem. Simply download the video to a laptop or desktop and view. After all, race crews, snowboarders, fsher- men, boaters, mountain climbers and others commonly use them to record action. Why not put them to work in the shop and during test drives? Tese wireless recorders are tiny and can be mounted just about anywhere. Just remember to remove them before handing the vehicle over to the customer. — Courtesy of Brian Carruth, Birchwood Automotive GLOW PLUG SERVICE In order to remove and replace the glow plugs on a 2012 Ford F-350 equipped with the 6.7L diesel engine, remove the RH or LH fender splash shield. Remove the fve engine sound shield retainers and the RH or LH engine sound shield. Using the tabs on the top of each glow plug connector, pull the glow plug connector of of the glow plug. Te use of an 8 mm deep-well socket with no internal shoulder is needed to remove the glow plug. When installing a new glow plug, initially tighten to 35 in.-lbs., followed by an additional turn of 45 to 55 degrees (this is specifed as a torque-plus- angle method). Pull the glow plug electrical connector out of its outer sleeve. Connect the glow plug connector to the glow plug, and push the connector down to lock the connector onto the glow plug. Re-install the engine sound shield using the fve shield retainers. Once the new glow plug is installed, connect the connector and push the outer sleeve down to lock it onto the glow plug. Mini digital sports cameras can be useful for recording and documenting a variety of mechani- cal issues during a road test.
